Why buy a Netbook?
Netbook sales are expected to top $20 million dollars world-wide in 2009, and for good reason. They are smaller, lighter, and more inexpensive than other laptop and notebook computers. Netbooks are ultra-portable, and boast a longer battery life. Several years ago, a smaller computer meant spending more money, but popular netbook brands such as Asus, Acer, MSI, and Samsung have changed that.
Netbook producers have recognized the need for a more portable, affordable computer, and have filled that need by paring down specifications which would increase the size and weight of the computer and take a toll on battery efficiency. Many netbooks run customized open-source software, such as Linux, rather than Windows, for example. They feature smaller hard-drives, and many do not offer CD-ROM/DVD drives.
While these simplified machines are not a replacement for a high-powered lap-top or desktop computer, they are perfect for the intentions of many on-the-go consumers. With built in wireless connections and simple, functional software, these computers meet the needs of commuters and travelers admirably; with a price tag that is often under $500, they are a perfect second computer. Rather than a replacement for current technology, they are a supplement which allows greater mobility and functionality.
